Window Screen, Lexington (two works) (1997) is a Polaroid photograph taken by Cy Twombly (1928-2011) of a view from the windows of his studio in Lexington, Virginia. Lexington was the town of Twombly’s birth and although he left to live in Italy for many years, in later life he moved back, spending half the year there and the other in Gaeta, an Italian port town.
The diaristic nature of Window Screen, Lexington (two works) is typical of Twombly’s photography. He often found inspiration in his immediate surroundings yet, through the soft focus and hazy, sepia-toned hues of the work he lends the piece a certain dreamlike quality. The softness of Twombly’s photography is often exacerbated through the printing process, which utilised specialised copiers in order to enlarge his Polaroid images onto matte paper.
