Nicole Coson’s (b.1992) Untitled is produced through a distinctive monotype printing process. Coson takes a Venetian blind and, individually painting each slat, gradually lays them under the press in order to transmit their form onto the canvas. Through repeated pressing, the horizontal bands of Coson’s blinds unravel, with the slats bending and twisting out of shape to produce new and unforeseen forms. In Untitled, this tension between machine, matrix, and medium activates the otherwise inanimate blind, giving the work an uncanny, spectral power.
