To be treated like a pair of white shoes (2021) reflects the immediate emotional tarnish we feel when someone unintentionally hurts our feelings. The title relates to the feeling one has when they buy a new pair of gleaming white shoes – intending to keep them spotless – and unavoidably at one point they get dirtied causing disarray and disappointment. This painting processed through numerous iterations of compositions; initially, it was a still life depicting a window with three plants given to the artist as a birthday present alongside some newly dyed clothes, later it was based on an internet meme, before ultimately becoming this energetic, layered work which fluctuates between abstraction and figuration.
