Jane Simpson Tupperware Floating in Milk II, 2007

‘There are many points of contact between Jane Simpson’s work and that of Morandi: the economy of his practice in using the objects found around him to make work, the poetry of the everyday in which he was so interested.’ — Mark Godfrey

Departing from an interest in Morandi’s still lives, Jane Simpson’s radical practice seeks to re-invent the classical still life genre of art; where inanimate objects are placed amongst each other to create enigmatic compositions.

In Jane Simpson’s Tupperware Floating in Milk series, kitchen implements are placed semi-submerged in milk – a symbolic device with associations of motherhood, nourishment and purity. The close crop of the image suggests a continuous shallow sea of abandoned objects lie beyond the picture plane.

A work from this series resides in the permanent collection of the British Council Collection.
