Jane Simpson is known for her both elegant and uncanny sculptures that transform familiar objects, bringing a magical quality to quotidian, functional and domestic items.
Produced in 2022 in an edition of 15, Ice Cream Cone is a hand-crafted rubber replica of a traditional waffle ice cream cone – a treat served worldwide.
The work references a seminal earlier work from 1988, illustrated in Simpson’s monograph Fresh, Fresher.
Describing this series, Ulrike Groos noted, ‘Rubber copies of ordinary objects become dysfunctional items, lacking a firm form and structure. Soft and unstable, they lost their rigidity and wobble uncertainly or seem to be melting away.’
