Chandelier and Dim Sum Buffet (2021) was painted in Hong Kong. Chan was drawn to a beautiful, antique Chinese wooden chandelier in the renowned China Club dim sum restaurant; the dramatic way that shadows and light gloriously radiated around the beams of the room. After initially devising the work, Chan took a three-week studio break, attempting to figure out how to make the painting work. Around this time, Chan found herself in a surreal and somewhat scary reality where she found herself using a kitchen knife to unlock a tightly stuck door at home—a visceral situation she synthesised into this painting. ‘In the end, the kitchen knife saved the day,’ Kristy observes.
