Arm Wrestling Party No.2 (2021) distils the intensity of an arm wrestling club Chan regularly attends in Hong Kong. Chan is interested in how the physicality of arm wrestling resembles a ‘Human Pretzel’ shape, a notion which she has returned to in other recent works. Chan considers how the tangled formation of arm wrestling resembles how – broadly – humans are connected to each other through different activities, how in our social fabric ‘we’re all just tangled up like a pretzel.’ 

Chan notes, ‘I started “training” and learning how to properly arm wrestle with my partner at the beginning of 2021. We continued going to arm wrestling clubs and went together to one in Berlin, and will visit another in Hanover soon, after The Artist Room’s exhibition Totally Not opens. I really like how focused people are and all the conversations are about how to train your finger and wrists strength – it’s just so wholesome.’
