Ed Ruscha

b. 1937

Ed Ruscha (b.1937, Omaha) currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Ruscha began his career as a graphic artist before expanding his practice to include painting, printmaking, photography,  and the production of artist books. He often looks to advertising for inspiration, bringing words — as form, symbol, and material — to the forefront of his work. Employing a deadpan sensibility, Ruscha explores the banality of the urban landscape. With humour and a dry wit, he oscillates between sign and substance, locating the sublime in landscapes both artificial and natural.

Ruscha studied at the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts) from 1956-60. He has had numerous solo shows at major institutions including The Modern Art Museum of Fort Wirth, Texas (2011); The Hayward Gallery, London (2009); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2004) and The Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2004). Ruscha most recently exhibited his work in solo shows at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, Sonoma (2021) and Oklahoma Contemporary, Oklahoma (2021).
